What Are CPAP Machines?

CPAP or (continuous positive airway pressure) machines work just as they are named. They provide a constant flow of pressurized air that helps keep airways open.

CPAP machines typically have a tank, tube, and mask assembly used to combat sleep-related breathing disorders. Disorders like sleep apnea and hypoventilation are some of the more common conditions treated by these machines.

Why Did Philips Recall Their CPAP Machines?

As part of their CPAP machine's tank assembly, Philips used polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) foam. This foam was used for noise and vibration reduction while the machine was in operation.

Unfortunately, the PE-PUR foam would break down, releasing gases and materials into the machine's airways, causing users to breathe or swallow these harmful byproducts.

The foam's breakdown was much more likely to occur if the machine was exposed to high heat, humidity, or environments where ozone cleaning was used.

While Philips claims that the analysis of the potential health dangers is still ongoing, they decided to enact a voluntary recall on June, 14th 2021

Which CPAP Machines Did Phillips Recall?

While Philips recalled millions of their respiratory devices, not all contained the potentially harmful (PE-PUR) foam. A spokesperson for Philips, Steve Klink, told Reuters that 80% of the recalled units were CPAP machines, and 20% were ventilators.

The largest amount of devices recalled came from Philip's more cost-effective line of "Dream Station" CPAP machines.

While the Dream Station machines were the most common, the following devices manufactured between 2009 and April 26, 2021, are affected by the recall.
